Here is the first installment of my writing prompts. Enjoy!
A new duckling is born in Duckland, but he has a peculiar horn on his head. The parents are worried that the new born will be banished from the tribe so they discuss leaving. Write a scene in which the father and the mother discuss it, but write it from the POV of the little duckling who cannot speak yet, but can understand.
(dialogue, inner dialogue, inner thoughts, description)
Brax is traveling over a mountain, in search for the village where he thinks his father is lost. As he passes through a valley, a red dragon descends from the sky and cuts his way. Write a scene in which the boy, 15 of age, who had never seen a dragon before, is astonished of the magical appearance. Surprisingly, he is not afraid of the dragon. They talk. Keep the POV with the boy. Make him convince the dragon to take him on his back and fly in search of his father.
Adam and Eve are alone in the Garden of Eden, talking about being the first people created, when somebody taps them on their shoulders. They turn around and face a man with two heads named Xyvin. He’s trying to convince them that they are only in the imagination of a boy who lives on the planet Avinia. Describe the scene with their dialogue and a fight scene where Adam attacks Xyvin, trying to banish him from Eden.
A wormhole teleports Mozart to the Comic Con in New York in 2012 and, somehow, he speaks English. Start the scene when he wakes up and walks through the dark, then opens a door which turns up to be a janitor’s closet. He steps right into the comic con. Write a scene in which you describe his total consternation as to what he is seeing. Follow-up with a scene in which he sees someone who he thinks is Joseph Haydn, when in fact it’s James Drake, a man dressed up in a 17th century costume. Write the dialogue scene in which Mozart tries to talk to “Haydn.”
(action, internal monologue, dialogue)
A spaceship returns from warp speed and is unable to make contact with Earth. Upon approach the crew discovers that both Earth and its Moon have vanished. Instead, all that is left behind is a wide circle of floating debris. Write a scene from the perspective of the ship’s captain discussing the issue with his team of four. Try to show us the emotion through actions and dialogue.
You are up on a hill, looking over the most beautiful palace you have ever imagined. The ground is trembling and with every minute the quake goes stronger. The palace starts to crumble under your eyes. Write a scene in which you first describe the palace in detail. Follow by a description of its total destruction. Avoid long passages, and try to involve all the senses.
Picture yourself and four other close members of your family. Now turn them all into fantastic creatures. Choose from any that you know that somehow match the character – orcs, elves, wizards, unicorns, etc. Put all of those characters in the middle of an arena, surrounded by thousands. You all have to fight two armed giants and survive. Write a fight scene, keeping the POV on yourself (write in 1st of 3rd person).
The Little Red Riding Hood had a dream before she went to visit her grandmother. In her dream, it was revealed that she will meet the wolf, therefore she’s carrying an AK-47 to protect herself. In the forest, she meets 3PO, the golden robot from Star Wars. She pulls the automatic gun on him and he lifts his hands up. Write a scene from this moment on, from the perspective of the girl. Make a fun, weird dialogue between the two characters. Make them get friendly. In the end, make the wolf show up from within the robot and eat her. Have fun with it.
(dialogue, action, humor)
Dr. Spencer managed to create a system by which he is able to turn himself into a fly. Today is the day of the experiment. He can only be a fly for 30 minutes, then the process is reversed. Dr. Spencer turns himself into a fly and flies away. Ten minutes into his test, he winds up in a spider web. He has only twenty minutes to survive before he is turned back into human. He notices the spider approaching. Write a scene that starts with Dr. Spencer flying as a fly around the room. Follow him into the spiderweb. You decide how the scene ends, but make us feel the horror and terror when he realizes what might happen.
(internal monologue, voice, POV, action)
